Our North Carolina tour begins in the “Land of the Waterfalls”, south of the Blue Ridge in the pastoral French Broad River Valley. From our base at the Highland Lake Inn in historic Flat Rock, just minutes from Hendersonville, we will visit three of the best waterfalls in Dupont State Forest and Raven Cliff Falls, the highest in South Carolina.
The next day, we begin with a hike at Carl Sandburg National Historic Site or to John Rock, with views of dramatic Looking Glass Mountain, before we reach the famed Blue Ridge Parkway for spectacular views and incredible hiking on some of the highest mountains in the East.
Our next two nights are spent at the Waynesville Resort and Spa, nestled between the Blue Ridge and the Great Smoky Mountains. We return to the Blue Ridge to hike in the unusual forests at Graveyard Ridge or hike on the remarkable “heath balds” that provide sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
We explore a quiet corner of Smoky Mountain National Park on our last full day. In the isolated Cataloochee Valley we get a glimpse of the past as we hike among the restored buildings of a forgotten community, while a vigorous climb to the historic fire tower atop Sterling Mt. rewards us with amazing views of the southern Appalachians.
We spend the last morning in the beautiful North Carolina State Arboretum.
